Nuvvena naa Nuvvena
Nuvvena naku Nuvvena…
Just with the first line, we tend to sing along the song, that magical this movie is. Sekhar Kammula’s directorial and screenplay skills are poured into this movie to be so amazing. The movie is about a girl, Roopa, who loses her family to a drunkard’s rash driving. She grows up all on her own, to be a fine woman with self-esteem and fierceness. She plans to get married to her long-time boyfriend Rahul, but it gets cancelled in the last moment because of an issue with her sari. There, Anand, son of the man who caused Roopa’s family’s death, sees her and decides to be with her. He rents a small room next to Roopa’s and tries to woo her in several ways. But as he keeps failing, her friend Anita, keeps helping him in doing something good for her. Suddenly, Rahul comes to her, after his mother’s death. She helps him in every way as a friend but he tries to take advantage of her. At that time, Anand helps her and scolds her for her decisions. He then, leaves the rented room and goes back to his life. They meet again at a Dandiya night where Roopa confesses her love and he reveals that he is son of the man who killed her family. She forgives and wants to move on in life and they end up together.
The movie has a very simple and serene screenplay, with a developing-urban backdrop. The film was shot in Padmarao Nagar, Hyderabad, so as to bring in the authenticity, the story demands. The movie tries to tell only one thing that is being real, doesn’t cost anything. Roopa believes in being herself, no matter what comes in her way. She is so fine, that she knows where to bend her knee and where to take a strong stand. She teaches us that, no matter any kind of adjustments, it is important to feel the belongingness, once it is gone, nothing can fix that friendship or relationship. This is a subtle style of Sekhar Kammula in his movies, to throw light at the most sensitized issues. Anand, on the other hand, is a gentleman, who has his set of theories and values. He tries to be very convincing most of the time, in order to make things work out with people around him. Even though he has power to manipulate things, he doesn’t do it. It says volumes about him as a person. He is a concerned man, who tries to talk in to things for a peaceful ending, but if the situations take turn, he can turn red and go blind with anger. These two characters, were written similar to 2 puzzle pieces which complete each other. We may have, come across at least one person like that in our life. This movie was actually a thesis project by Sekhar Kammula for his Masters in Fine Arts in Howard University. This story was rejected by multiple producers saying that it was too simple and would not be a hit. But turns out, that the movie ran a complete 100 days in every theatre. This movie, attracted every middle-class family, as it was very relatable. The songs in the movie were also a super hit. The song Vacche vacche nalla mabbulara is still on radios and playlists whenever there is rain in city. The other song Yamunatheeram is another melody that rings in our ears from time to time. All the songs were written by Veturi Sundararama Murthy garu. The words in every song, feel like an emotion that had no name. The other characters in the movie, were apt to the story and backdrop. The little conversations and exchange of basic words and phrases that we use on daily basis, were also made really attractive. The movie backed many awards and was also screened at International film festival of India.
