Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp fiction will go down in history as one of the best compelling black satirical movies in Hollywood. In fact this movie has had such huge impact on the audience’s perception on black comedy that Tarantino became the face of an unconventional film maker.
Pulp Fiction is one such example of Quentins unconventional film making method. Its a chronology of the life’s of various characters leading to a unusual conclusion.
Pumpkin – Honey bunny
The story begins with two hysteric love birds that plan on looting the restaurant they were dining in. Quentin starts off with the film with this scene and concludes in the same scenario although with a different outcome. In short I could say its the beginning of the end.
Vincent Vega – Jules Winnfield
Vincent and Jules are hired contract killers that work for a gangster, Boss Marsellus Wallace. Both the characters have a distinguished perception about their boss all this while purchasing a black briefcase from Wallace’s business associates ending in a bloodbath.
Vincent Vega – Mia Wallace
Marsellus Wallace tells Vincent to take Mia out for a meal and make sure she has fun and feel lonely. Vincent awestruck by her beauty tries to maintain his dignity and make sure she has a good time only to see her overdose on heroin which she presumed it to be cocaine. Vincent instead of taking her to the hospital takes her to the dealer from who he purchased the heroin in order to save her life. Classic Tarantino plot.
Butch Coolidge – Marsellus Wallace
Part-1
Perhaps one of the most enthralling episodes in this intriguing movie is this Butch and Marsellus’s part. Marsellus pays Butch who is a boxer to get knocked out in the fifth round but Butch being the uptight boxer hires his own bookie to bet on his win which ensues him to escape from Marsellus.
Butch Coolidge – Gold watch
Butch with his wife Fabienne stay low from Marsellus in order to escape later realises that his wife had forgotten to pack his father’s gold watch, the only heirloom. Which takes us back to his childhood when he meets Captain Koons veteran of the Vietnam war who served with his father. Captain Koons narrates little Butch the story of how his great-grandfather purchased the gold watch and hands it over to his grandfather who then hands it over to his father and since his father who was shot during the Vietnamese war ask Koons for a favor to deliver this watch to Butch. The agonised Butch goes to the apartment to retrieve the watch.
Butch Coolidge – Marsellus Wallace
Part-2
After retrieving the watch in his apartment Butch see’s Vincent Vega who was asked to kill Butch. Butch however kills Vincent and fled away thinking that a his misery are out of his hand only to find Marsellus walking across his car. Marsellus tries to kill Butch but Butch runs away one thing leading to another, both of them end up being victims of a sexual kinky act by the shop owner Maynard. Somehow the other Butch escapes from this and helps Marsellus to compensate for what Butch did. All is well and Butch is free.
Vincent Vega – Jules Winnfield – Winston Wolfe
After retrieving the black briefcase, Jules and Vincent drive holding one of Brett’s(Wallace’s business partner) associate. Vincent accidentally shoots the associate which leads to his blood splattering all over the car. Fearing that the cops might catch them Jules decides to take a detour and goes to his friend Jimmie’s house. Marsellus then sends Winston Wolfe the “cleaner” to take care of the mess. Wolfe instructs Vincent and Jules to clean the car, dispose the clothes that were soaked in blood and take the car to the junkyard.
Although Christopher Walken’s character was a minute one he still managed to pull it off with his witty nature.
Vincent/Jules – Pumpkin/honey bunny
Jules decides to retire from his life of crime while sitting in the diner with Vincent. The exact same diner that pumpkin and honey bunny decides to loot. Jules being ambivalent about this scenario decides the let this slide and allows them to take his wallet and both Jules and Vincent walk out of the diner.
The screenplay of this movie is just astounding with every scene and dialogues being compelling. No wonder Pulp Fiction won the Academy Award for the original screenplay.
