His style of direction is known to be peculiar and dark and mostly inclined towards anti social elements. His movies are filled with very interesting visuals, which look very natural and authentic to the stories chosen. This is because, he chooses to use handheld and hidden cameras to make the movie look very natural. He started his career as assistant director under Ram Gopal Varma for the movie Satya. Eventually he wrote his known script and directed Paanch movie. The movie was never released due to censorship issues. His best work were Black Friday, DevD, Raman Raghav 2.0, That Girl in Yellow Boots, Manmarziyaan and Gangs of Wasseypur. He also co-produced for the movie Lunchbox which won critical appraisal from many. His work was most liked when his shows and films were on Netflix. He first debuted on the streaming platform by co-directing Sacred Games, which was a huge success. He then co-directed Lust Stories and Ghost Stories too. He won four filmfare awards and Yash Bharti award for his contribution in Indian Cinema. He was praised by the Government of France with Ordre des Arts et des Lettres(Knight of the Order of Arts and letters).
