As a result of Bollywood’s nescience about Kollywood, Tamil movies are often stereotyped as dark-skinned actors with absurd elevations using awful accents and eating idly-sambar twenty-four seven. It’s time to set back from these assumptions because Kollywood is now a hub for brand new content, native representation, a landmark for realistic emotions and most importantly love and passion for film making and respect to the cinema.
Direction:
Kaithi is one such film that left a mark on the audience outlook towards filmmaking with its originality and presentation of a simple storyline in a phenomenal way. Lokesh Kanagaraj, the young and zealous director of the film well-known for his thrilling narration made his directorial debut with Managaram.
Cinematography:
Kaithi is basically a “one-night story” which means the whole film is directed in dark with low light. The main and utmost reason for capturing the perfect details of the film is the man behind the lens Sathyan Sooryan, the cinematographer of the film. In the climax, the machine gun scene was totally unexpected which made the audience go crazy.
Music:
What makes cinema more engaging to the audience when there are no commercial elements like mass songs and comedy? No doubt, it is the background music. That’s the one which brings the audience into the film and makes it more and more engaging. Sam C. S. scored the film. There is one rap element and mostly it is just the feel of the music that made every scene worth watching.
Stunning Screenplay:
The screenplay is the predominant key of the film. Each scene has its own intensity, driven with extraordinary emotions, keeping every scene realistic and gripping with unanticipated scenes which gives the audience a whole new experience with no commercial elements. Speaking of the intensity of the film, we must mention the scene where Dilli enjoys a plateful of biryani at a party. This may be shot normally but in a trademark film, every detail counts. The scene was captured in such a way that made the audience curious to know more about Dilli.
Character arcs:
Dilli:
A simple man who lost his wife spent ten years in jail and has never seen his daughter before. He is interrupted by several criminal issues on his way when he goes to see his daughter for the first time.
Anbu:
A ferocious drug lord with a stylish screen presence trying to bring his brother out from jail.
Bejoy:
A sincere police officer who gave his best in saving the reputation of the police department and arresting the criminals.
Finest Starcast:
Karthi was so into the character and no doubt, this is Karthi’s best performance till date. Arjun Das’ performance as Anbu is unmatchable. His dialogue delivery with his baritone voice is next level. Narain who played the role of Inspector Bejoy totally rationalized it.
This is not a regular film with commercial elements like catchy songs, unwanted dialogues and stupid elevations. It is a pure story-based film with a fresh presentation.
The climax of the film leaves the audience in doubt if there will be a sequel to the film. Director Lokesh confirmed that there will be a sequel and it will begin soon after he completes his upcoming project Master.
Final Verdict:
A rollercoaster ride of gripping and emotional elements with an insane screenplay. One of the best films of the decade.
