What if I ask you what are the few memories you will cherish forever in your life and what made those moments so special to be remembered? The answer may vary from person-to-person but deep down we all know that it’s the presence of the people you love which made those moments memorable. We truly start to live in the memory which makes it very difficult for us to accept the person’s absence in our life after they are gone. The only thing that fills their void are the memories we made with them. That’s what brings a little smile on our abysmal days, hope at hopeless times and a ray of happiness in dark phase.
Oye is not a regular love story where the hero tries to impress the heroine with cheesy lines and a macho attitude. It is a once in a lifetime film which makes us fall in love with Uday(Siddharth) and Sandhya(Shamili) in their journey of love. It is the story of two different people living in two different worlds. Uday is a rich kid who becomes the chairman of their family business after his father’s death. He is a person who believes happiness is ephemeral and hence celebrates every moment of his life. On the other hand, Sandhya, an organized and simple girl who runs nursery at a beach-house by paying installments every month counts on long-term happiness.
Basically, Uday is a party animal. When Uday throws a party on his birthday which also happens to be the day of the new year, his first love, Sandhya calls him “Oye!” and that’s when they first cross paths. Like every other girl, Sandhya also dreams of marrying a guy with ideal husband qualities, but our hero is nowhere close to that. He tries everything to impress her with his innocence that makes us smile throughout the film but nothing seems to woo her.
Uday’s friend, Fatso is the kind of friend every person deserves to have in their life. No matter what, a friend like him is always there for you to clink a glass of drink during happy times and offering their shoulder to lean upon at low times in life.
One day, when Uday discovers that Sandhya is diagnosed with cancer, he gets devastated. He makes sure she doesn’t know anything. He asks Sandhya to make a bucket list of things she wants to do once in a lifetime. They begin their journey accordingly to accomplish the things on her bucket list. On their way to Calcutta, they meet an old couple on the train. The old lady talks to Sandhya about Uday and tells her how lucky she is to have a guy like him in her life. She gives a small smile realizing that she’s starting to fall for him.
Apart from the leads, all the characters in the film are so delightful. Every character has its own influence on the audience about how little things in life matter the most.
Soon after their trip, Sandhya falls in love with Uday, she is no more a self-centred woman. Throughout the trip, Uday made her every second count, he became the reason for her happiness and introduced a whole new world to her.
The climax of the film is one of the most emotional scenes ever, that makes the audience shed their tears when Sandhya realizes that she can’t be a part of Uday’s life. The movie ends showing Uday and Sandhya sitting on a bench waiting for rain to pour welcoming 2008 which slightly fades, following Uday sitting alone on the bench welcoming 2009. This makes our heart clench taking in the fact that Sandhya is no more. The time Uday spent with Sandhya is his little infinity which gave him memories for eternity to cherish.
The birthday present scene with twelve gifts for every month is one of the most beautiful scenes ever.
The songs are a rich fodder of the film. Each song has its own place starting with the song “Sehari” which celebrates life. This song depicts the lifestyle of Uday and Sandhya before they met. “Oye Oye” is the song that describes Uday’s emotions when he meets Sandhya for the first time. “Anukoledhenadu” describes the happiness of Sandhya when she does things that she has never done or thought of before.
After so many years, Oye album is still the audience’s all-time favourite.
